Harmony
Re-Enactment – "Treading the Steps"
The
female convict transport Harmony arrived in Hobart from
England on 14 January 1829. The women were held on-board
for 8 days before being disembarked at 4am and marched, with
their children, to Cascades Female Factory. They were
the first ship-load of female convicts to be incarcerated at
the factory.
>On
22 January 2006, a re-enactment of the walk of the Harmony
women and children from Sullivan's Cove to the Female Factory
Historic Site took place, though at a more reasonable hour.
The Lady Nelson, acting as the Harmony, disembarked
the 100 women and their children and, after participating in
a drill and roll call, they walked through the streets of Hobart,
along the Rivulet Walk, past
Blundstone tannery, towards
the female factory, arriving just after noon.
The walkers were accompanied by drummers and marines.
Upon arrival at the Female Factory Historic Site, the 'female
convicts and children' were welcomed by the 'Matron' and entertainments
continued until 3pm, even the temperature reached 39 degrees.
Entertainments included:
The
re-enactment was sponsored by
Blundstone footwear.
